Finally, an explanation that clicks

Better than I expected. Rare to find a technical book this well judged.

I came to this book already familiar with the basics, and it still had plenty to offer. It is denser than the page count suggests, and I found myself slowing down around the middle. The author avoids over-explaining, which keeps the pace up but means you need to pay attention. Worth the money and the reading time, without hesitation.

Almost excellent

Well worth picking up if you already have the basics.

I had been on the fence about this one for a while, and I should have bought it sooner. The chapters on game programming are the strongest — the examples are stripped down but complete, and I could follow along without constant guessing. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. Good value for the price and worth the time it takes to work through properly.

Did not live up to the description

Not for me. The pacing did not work and I struggled to finish it.

I was looking for something that would bridge the gap between tutorials and proper reference material, and this does that well. The progression from chapter to chapter is well thought out; nothing feels out of order. Some of the diagrams are dense and I had to reread a few sections, though that may just be me. I would look elsewhere unless you have a specific reason to need this particular title.

The best book on this subject I have read

The clearest explanation of game programming I have come across.

This is the third book I have read on game programming this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. Some terminology is introduced without much ceremony; I had to look a few things up along the way. The book rewards careful reading. Skimming it would be a mistake. If you have the prerequisites, this is an easy recommendation. I will be keeping it on my desk rather than the shelf.

Excellent from start to finish

Outstanding. I kept finding reasons to come back to it.

I bought this on a whim after seeing it mentioned in a forum thread, and I am glad I did. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. A few of the examples could be more realistic, but the underlying points come across clearly. There is a section near the end that ties several earlier ideas together in a way I had not seen before. This is the book I wish had existed when I started working with databases & big data.
